12 Design Tips from an Eclectic Country House You Can Use in Your Own Home

After a decade in Paris, a family puts down eclectic roots—fueled by many a flea market find—in the CT countryside.

After spending seven years renting in Cornwall, CT with her family, an editor at The Paris Review jumped at the chance to own this house when it came on the market. "You could feel what an extraordinary time the family who lived there before had in the home," says the current owner. "Every drawer was filled with toothpicks and everything you need to make martinis. They had a turntable and a great vinyl collection of old Italian songs."

The old farmhouse dates back to 1801 and the family that owned it in the 1960's—who were actual OSS spies—added ranch-style extension with glass garage doors that served as their party room. After the current family purchased the home, architect Doug Wright was hired to build a second-floor master bedroom that matched the extension. Here are the best design tips we pulled out of the stylish space.

1. Start at the Flea Market
The home owner found a "million" things at thrift markets and antique stores in the Berkshires, a half hour from the house. "I follow Fawn's advice," she says, repeating her interior decorator, Fawn Galli's wise words, "If you love something, even if you don't have a place for it, you should just get it and you'll find a spot for it."

2. Not Every Detail Needs an Overhaul
In the room that connects the living room to the mudroom (top left), the owner was initially skeptical of the tangerine-eggplant color combination, but once the project's contractor said he liked it, they decided to keep the bizarre combination. During the three year renovation, the family rented a nearby home dating from the 1700's, which had high wood paneling. There were many details from that second home that were copied here.
